Skull Found On Fireplace Mantle Identified As Missing Tennessee Man

Human Skull

A skull that was discovered and sat on a man's fireplace in East Tennessee for more than a year has been identified as a missing man.

The skull matched DNA from family members of Junior Willie McCann, who has been missing since 2012, District Attorney General Russell Johnson announced in a Facebook post on Monday.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office was recently informed of the skull's existence and told it was reportedly found in March 2019 in the Gobey area of Morgan County. The department immediately retrieved the skull, which had sunglasses placed on it and had been sitting on a mantle since its discovery.

The skull was then sent for testing with and matched DNA from McCann's family. Johnson said the MCSO, Tennessee Department of Corrections and other authorities underwent an extensive search of the area in which the skull had been taken "into custody" by the man who reported to have found it.

Johnson also acknowledged rumors that McCann is believed to have been killed by a family member who is now deceased as well.

The MCSO is continuing to investigate the death of McCann or any other individual that remains missing. Anyone with information regarding this or other missing persons investigations is advised to contact the Morgan County Sheriff's Office at (423)-346-6262.
