Black Lives Matter Mural Set To Be Painted In East Nashville

North Carolina's Most Populous City As Battleground States Shaped By Virus-Fueled Downturn

A Black Lives Matter mural is reportedly scheduled to be painted in East Nashville this month.

A group of artists led by muralist Thaxton Waters II plan to paint the mural on October 17 along Woodland Avenue, John Smith Marketing confirmed to FOX 17 News.

The mural will include large, bold letters similar to previously painted murals featured in several other cities including Knoxville, New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Tulsa and Eugene, FOX 17 News reports. There is also a separate ongoing effort to have a Black Lives Matter mural featured outside the Tennessee Capitol building at the intersection of Charlotte Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Nashville, which has nearly reached its goal of 1,000 signatures as of Monday morning, according to Change.org.

A news release obtained by FOX 17 News stated why the city of Nashville's role in the Civil Rights movement made it an ideal choice to feature the new Black Lives Matter mural.

"Nashville’s Civil Rights movement entailed four movements," a news release said via FOX 17 News. "The Sit-ins, Freedom riders, Demonstrations, and the Arts Movement. The Arts Movement in Nashville of the Civil Rights Movement era, led by Alicelene Hunter as its instigator and champion left an indelible mark on the city which also included theater, writing, and art. This movement culminated and continues into an annual program called the African Street Festival held at Hadley Park and online during the Pandemic."
